Dr Ben Britton
Co-Investigator
Ben Britton is interested in the behaviour of zirconium alloys in nuclear environments, with a specific interest in performance, microstructure, and hydrides. His group have developed, in collaboration with colleagues at Rolls-Royce and MPIE new understanding of blocky alpha grain growth, slip, and hydride formation. He leads the micromechanics theme in the Rolls-Royce Nuclear UTC at Imperial. He holds a Royal Academic of Engineering Research Fellowship on designing materials for safer reactors (2005-2010). In addition to his technical science work, he also works to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in science, technology, engineering, medicine and maths as a Trustee of Pride in STEM and a leader member of The Inclusion Group for Equity in Research in STEMM.
Ben is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Scientist, and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM). In 2015 he won the IOM3 Silver Medal, in 2016 he won the Royal Academy of Engineering/Engineers Trust Young Engineer of the Year award, and in 2017 he won the Imperial College President’s Award and Medal as an Outstanding Early Career Researcher. He can be regularity found tweeting as @bmatb.
