Project Title: Characterising the Deformation of Irradiated and Hydrogen Charged Zircaloy
Rehana Jalil completed an undergraduate degree in Chemistry at The University of Manchester, followed by a MSc in Advanced Engineering Materials at the same institution. In 2018, she embarked on a PhD in nuclear materials as part of the Materials for Demanding Environments CDT and Rolls-Royce Nuclear UTC.
The focus of the project is to gain a mechanistic understanding of how the fatigue properties of zirconium alloys change in the presence of hydrides and irradiation damage. By resolving the local strains that develop under different conditions using high resolution digital image correlation combined with microscopy techniques, an understanding of how irradiation damage and hydrogen pickup can severely limit the life of fuel assemblies will be elucidated.
