Prof. Joseph D. Robson
Co-investigator
Joe Robson graduated from University of Cambridge in 1993 with a degree in Natural Sciences specialising in metallurgy. He followed this with a PhD from the same institution under the supervision of Prof. Sir Harry Bhadeshia, focussed on modelling precipitation in power plant steels. Appointed as a lecturer at the University of Manchester in 2003, he was awarded a chair in 2015.
Current research focuses on light alloys, in particular aluminium and magnesium, and zirconium alloys for nuclear applications. He has a particular interest on understanding and simulating microstructural evolution in these materials with an emphasis on modeling precipitation in industrial alloys. He has published over 140 papers on these topics. He received the Grunfeld medal from the UK Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3) in 2011 and the Hume-Rothery prize from the same institution for his work on phase transformations in 2015. He is an active member of the light metals board of the IoM3 (since 2003) and a council member of The Manchester Metallurgical Society (since 2001), serving as Vice-President (2008-9).
